Hey, I'm Steven, and I deal with depression.
Regularly. Since I was a kid. Usually, it stops by a couple times a year, unannounced, and it is super annoying. It messes with my brain, drains the color out of my world, and gives me horrible thoughts about how much I suck and how I'd be better off dead.
If you follow my letters, you've seen it crop up year after year like a shitty, energy-sucking recurring flu.
Over the years, I've studied it, tried to learn what makes it tick, and read up on research about what we know about depression - and what's proven to work.
Eventually, I started talking publicly about depression. First in a facebook post a long time back. Later, in a couple articles that went viral worldwide.
The response to those articles taught me that there was a real need for some accessible resources on depression, for regular folks like us. Over the next two years, I researched and wrote The No-Bullshit Guide to Depression, and at the end of 2016, published it.
It's turned out to really connect with people, and I get emails every week telling me how it's helped somebody finally get a handle on their depression. I'm delighted that it's become a resource for folks like me and you to handle and deal with regular visits from Aunt Dee.
If you deal with depression, first and most of all, you are not alone. I and millions of people (about 20% of the population) deal with it too. It sucks and is some major bullshit to go through.
And second, you're going to be ok, I'm going to be ok, and we're going to be ok. Figuring out depression is mind-bending and weird and exhausting and really, really hard sometimes. But you can do it. Let's both make it through today. Tomorrow can worry about itself.
